World Health Organization Issues Warning Over Critical Lack of Obesity Medications

Under one in 10 people who could benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy have access to them, caution the World Health Organization as it publishes its initial recommendations on the therapies.

Considering more than one billion individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is calling for increased and just availability to these injectable treatments.

Based on estimates, over two billion could be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"Our new guidelines recognises that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be treated with comprehensive and ongoing support," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, constrained manufacturing, and logistical bottlenecks are key barriers to broad access to the treatments that can aid individuals in losing significant body mass, notes the agency.

GLP-1 Therapy Supply Crisis

Despite the current best projected outlook, the supply of these medications would only suffice for about 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, as stated by the WHO.

The recommendation encourages governments and firms to expand access, through strategies including voluntary licensing.

Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the main component of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in a number of nations in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Jabs Function

GLP-1 drugs replicate a body's own hormone to delay gastric emptying, reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness so individuals reduce food intake.

People commonly begin shedding pounds after several weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Evidence points to users may regain a significant portion a year later of stopping the treatment, because their usual appetite come back.

Being overweight or obese raises your likelihood for experiencing health problems, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and some malignancies.

Excess weight concerns individuals in every country and was responsible for over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
